Thames Valley Children’s Centre Rett Syndrome Clinic
The Ontario Rett Syndrome Association is very excited to announce the opening of a Rett Syndrome Clinic in London, Ontario at the Thames Valley Children’s Centre (TVCC). The first day of clinic was March 10, 2010.
This newly developed clinic would not exist without the dedication of Dr. Victoria Siu. Dr. Siu has personally donated funds towards the clinic. She has also been instrumental in locating a place for the clinic to be held and the professionals that will see the patients with Rett syndrome.
O.R.S.A. has agreed to co-sponsor this specialized clinic for the next two years. O.R.S.A’s financial support is approximately $8650.00. This funding will pay for the nurse coordinator’s time. Dorothy Harris will be acting as the nurse coordinator. She will work a half day a week for the Rett Clinic. She will answer phone calls, schedule appointments, check on patients when new medications have been ordered and offer support to families of the Rett Clinic. At this time four clinic days will be held per year. Future Rett Clinic days will be announced soon. Referrals can be faxed to 519 685-8705.
The TVCC Rett Clinic will see girls with Rett syndrome that live within the centre’s catchment region (ten surrounding counties). All patients must be under the age of 18 and to be seen at the clinic your child must have a diagnosis of Rett syndrome. This can be because the MECP2 mutation has been found or from a clinical diagnosis. Hopefully in time the Rett Clinic will expand to meet the needs of all our girls and women in the Western Chapter region.
O.R.S.A. wishes to thank all of those involved in making this newly established Rett Syndrome Clinic a reality. A special thank you must be extended to Dr. Victoria Siu and the staff of the Thames Valley Children’s Centre. In Ontario, the association now supports and provides funding to two Rett Syndrome Clinics. The Ontario Rett Syndrome Association continues to network with the other regions of the province to seek out physicians that are interested in this challenging disorder and wanting to champion a local Rett Syndrome Clinic.
Together we are “Building Healthy Tomorrows” for all the individuals who have Rett syndrome and their families!
